Peter Sinks near Logan, UT - one of the coldest places
Peter Sinks is a bowl-shaped depression up in the mountains near Bear Lake. It’s the perfect condition for severe, high-elevation temperature inversions (gets very cold at the bottom of bowl and warmer as you get up to the rim). We actually hold the record for the 2nd coldest location in the lower 48 states!
USU maintains weather stations up there and you can see the data in the pic (and access free on the USU website): it got down to -62F at the base of the bowl today (while it was “only” -11ish at my house). 🥶
The graph shows temperature at the rim and at the base of the bowl, as well as wind speed in those locations at Peter Sinks. Amazing!
