New FS on field-grown ranunc economics
This fact sheet is a budget for ranunculus produced in a field. It outlines the expected costs and returns of wholesale production in the Intermountain West. While ranunculus grown in a high tunnel was our most profitable crop yet (net returns of $5 per square foot), average yields in the field were less than half of the yields in the high tunnel, making field production of ranunculus unprofitable with wholesale markets. Even with the lowest-cost, best-yielding combination of management practices in our trials, growing ranunculus in the field resulted in an economic LOSS of $0.95 per square foot.
Our recommendation? Trial a small number of ranunculus in the field to make sure you can get marketable yields over 2 stems per plant before committing to more plants + utilize retail markets to increase profit potential.
